How to Draft Your Fantasy Football Team

While we all what an end all be all answer to this questions, I’m sorry to say that there is none.  When going into a fantasy football draft you need to be very flexible.  One of the biggest mistakes fantasy football owners make is going into their fantasy draft with a plan that is written in stone.

2016 Fantasy Football Draft: Late Round Options if you wait on Wide Receiver

Draft Strategy

As a zero running back guy, it’d weird this year to be talking about taking running backs early and looking for WR value in the later rounds.  That in fact seems to be the case this year.  In many leagues and mock drafts the fantasy football pendants are recommending people to grab wide receivers early and that’s just what they are doing.  They are generally safer in terms of injury and have more upside.  This in turn is leaving value at the running back position which is why I found myself trying to find some later round WR value to help round out my team if I can draft any WR studs early.

When to Draft a Player or Position: Comparing Value Across Different Positions

Draft Strategy

One of the biggest concerns Fantasy football owners encounter is knowing which player or position to draft and when.  Knowing when to draft players at particular positions is where most fantasy football team owners go wrong with their drafts.

Most fantasy owners go in with a list of guys they want to draft, but they don’t know which round to draft them or if they should choose their RB over their WR.  Usually after the first few rounds their plan goes out the window and it’s a crap shoot.

Starting a draft can be nerve racking, who should you draft?  For year’s people have been saying draft a running back first.  This is why the 1st round of drafts have been dominated by running backs.  Over the last few years wide receivers have popped up more in the first round.

Here’ a list of the top 5 QB’s

Cam Newton CAR 399
Tom Brady NE 347
Russell Wilson SEA 333
Blake Bortles JAC 332

5 Draft Mistakes Fantasy Owners Make

5 Draft Mistakes Fantasy Owners Make

Draft Strategy Fantasy Football

Fantasy mistakes happen to all of us, but not learning from them is the real crime.  In a effort to avoid sabotaging your fantasy football season before it even starts, Let’s look at five common draft day mistakes fantasy owners make.

Having Your Draft Plan Written in Stone

One of the best things you can do to prepare for you draft is to create a plan of attack.  A draft strategy in conjunction with participating in a number of mock drafts is a great way to prepare.

The common mistake I see every season is the lack of flexibility with an owners draft plan.  They want specific players or to get their QB in a certain found that they are lost if someone takes their player.  You may be passing up on a great player by grabbing your QB to early.

Every draft is different and you need to be prepared to react to opportunities that arise. Be sure to look at what positions owners are drafting and what positions there may be a run on.  Be sure to create tier levels for your players so you can have a number of players in your queue just in  case someone else drafts “your guy”.  That why you can get another player you like instead of rushing an making a mistake.

Top Fantasy Opportunities Based on Divisional Week

Like every week, if you want to win money from your FanDuel or DraftKings daily fantasy football contests, you need to look at the numbers to tell you the whole story;  Otherwise you are just guessing.

Over the course of the season I’ve talked about standard deviation and coefficient of variation, but this today I want to focus on different metric you should be using to create your winning daily fantasy football lineups.

This week since the slate of games is getting smaller as is the player pool, I wanted to take a look at which players are getting the most opportunities (targets) to score points.

After compiling some stats, it’s clear that Julian Edelman and Larry Fitzgerald are seeing the bulk of the targets last week.  This is evident by their prices on FanDuel and DraftKings this week as well, so most DFS players will be on these two players.  It will be hard to work both of these guys in your lineup this week especially if you want to include one or two of the top RB’s this week.  That’s why we need to use this data to help us find our 2nd and/or 3rd receiver this week.

Only a few weeks of daily fantasy football left as we move on to the Divisional Round of the playoffs.  Last week we saw some good games with some very interesting finishes.   For those of you who followed our lineup picks from our newsletter, you probably had some very good winnings in your account this week.  The Kansas City Defense was our big winner, scoring 29 points, Brown scored over 29, Kirk Cousins 21.36 and Jordan Reed 22.5 to name a few.

Quarterbacks

Russell Wilson $8,400 – Wilson is the 4th highest price which is a $500 saving over Palmer (the highest price).  Last time Wilson threw for 241, one TD and rushed for 53 yards.  Wilson to Baldwin has been a hot connection as of late.  Wilson has gone over 20 fantasy points 7 of the 8 games(over 30 in a few of them). If the savings is not good enough you can roll with Brady, Newton or Palmer.

DraftKings Daily Fantasy Football: Divisional Lineup Picks

Fantasy Football

Well, with another week of the football season gone and only a few weeks of daily fantasy football left we move on to the Divisional Round of the playoffs.  Last week we saw some good games with some very interesting finishes.    If you followed our lineup picks from our newsletter, you proably had some very good winnings in your account this week.  The Kansas City Defense was our big winner, scoring 29 fpts, Kirk Cousins 25.36 fpts, Jordon Reed 30, and Antonio Brown 21.9.

If you heeded our warning about Peterson, Hopkins and Baldwin, he did pretty good!

Quarterbacks

Carson Palmer $6,400 – This week of the QB’s, Palmer gets the best matchup, which is why he provides the best value this week.  He is surprising the cheapest of the QB’s from favored teams this week.  Green Bay defense has been poor, especially in the secondary.  That is probably why Rodgers was taking up all the time he could before snapping the ball in the second half.  Kirk Cousins did a good job moving the ball against them last week and I expect Palmer to do the same this week.  Besides three good receivers, the Cards have a very good pass catcher out of the backfield in Johnson.

Yahoo, DraftKings and FanDuel Picks for your lineup

Another year, another regular football season ends leaving most of us sad because our teams did not make the playoffs, but not us.   We still have daily fantasy football.  We can still play for four more weeks, all throughout the playoffs, to keep us entertained.  Whether you play Yahoo, DraftKings or FanDuel (or all three in my case) there is no end to the fun, especially since all three sites are a little different, so making lineups for each needs a slightly different strategy.

With that said, lets take a look at some picks for this weekend’s games and some good plays we can use in our lineups.  All game types whether cash games or GPP tournaments become a little harder to win since the player pool has been dramatically reduced.  This gives everybody a chance to put a decent lineup together, so we have to differentiate ours from everyone elses.

I know we always talk about using the Salary Cap Crusher to find players that offer good value, are consistent and that have upside, so today I’m going to give you a list of some much lesser owned players that will not only save you money and produce, but allow you to squeeze a number of studs into your lineups.  This is the last week we have to draft from a full slate of games so lets make this one count!

Brian Hoyer (QB) – We weren’t sure if Hoyer would be back this week so we got a nice price break on a QB with a great matchup.  Last time he played Jacksonville he put up 24 fantasy points on the Texans.  His DraftKings salary is great at $5,100, but on Fanduel $6,900, he is priced higher than Bradford making that a tempting offer.   His Yahoo price is $31, not much lower than Fitzpatrick and a number of others.

Week 15 -Taking a Look at the Redzone to Get You In the Green Zone

Fantasy Football

Decker RedZone TDSerious daily fantasy football players look at a number of stats from matchups, to player cost, to touches, etc to draft the right player for their DFS lineups.  Daily fantasy football has a large variance, because a touchdown can make such a big difference in a players score.  That’s why I like to look for players that have a good chance of scoring to help get me the most fantasy points. Today Im going to highlight a couple of wide receivers you may want to consider adding to your lineup this week.

Lets start with one of the top redzone touchdown leaders this year.
